There is a know bug with the Save as Default feature in the Raytrace properties dialog when activated from the Save view as Picture tool. You can still set the default raytrace settings from the 3D view settings....

1. Right click on the 3D view to activate the contect menu and select Properties.
2. Select Raytracer and define your raytracer settings.
3. The Save as Default button on this dialog works
4. You can now use your original method with the new raytrace settings remembered.

I am saving a series of raytraced images at different times of the day to see the effect of shadows. Im using the Save View as Picture tool in the Views toolbar. For each image I have to set my raytrace parameters, and although I use the Save as Default option, the defaults are never rememered, and its a pain to keep setting the defaults each time I want to create and save a raytraced image.
