Show 3D texture using 2D images and normal maps 10 Nov 2012 12:13 #485

You can improve the way you show brick and tile textures by employing a normal texture.

The normal map texture will change the way light reflects off the wall or floor and shows the otherwise flat brick texture.
Many artists use PhotoShop to create a normal map, but you can download and use GIMP 2 that also has the ability to create a normal map from your texture.

When you have your normal map you can either create a new material which would consist of your texture and your normal map or apply the normal map to the wall by editing the Default material in the Layer construction dialog. It is better to create and use a material because you can then use the result in future projects.
